A fan wrote in recently saying that he witnessed, “a seven year old go into uncontrollable giggles watching <the show> and go around saying ‘I will swallow your soul.’ afterwards.” I asked if he had video of that, because I’d love to put it in the show. Sadly, he hadn’t.

But that  got me thinking. If you (or someone you know) has a young child who would get a kick out of the show, do us a favor and record their reaction at watching. If I can get enough good videos, I’ll put them together in a new segment on the show.

Now, no twisting their arms, trying to get them to laugh. That’s cheating, and I can tell (ominous glare).

In other news, yes I am still working on Episode 8, and yes, I am hoping to be done in the next week or so. I’m just swamped at work.

 Calls For Cthulhu - Lovecraft Film Festival [3:31m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

As you have probably guessed, I’m a reader. I read a lot. In addition to the daily Internet news, I’m currently reading “From the Earth To the Moon” by Jules Verne (great steampunk engineering), “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens (powerful and poingiant), “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (pedantic and annoying), and “Gateway” by Fredrick Pohl (great old modern sci-fi). However, I put all of that aside when someone pointed out the short story “A Study in Emerald” by Neil Gaiman (thanks Summer!)

If you’re a fan of Gaiman’s writing (Neverwhere, Sandman, etc.) then you’re probably already interested in looking for this story. Gaiman is one of the best fantasy writers alive, and a personal favorite of mine. He’s also quite a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, which is what brings me to this post today.

Imagine an alternate past, where the Great Old Ones have risen, taken dominance over mankind, and ruled them as benevolent dictators. Imagine further that Sherlock Holmes was called up to consult on the murder of a consort to the “Queen”. Further, imagine that it was all flawlessly rendered by a man who seemed to be channelling Conan Doyle directly. That is what the “Study in Emerald” is about.

“A Study in Emerald” won the 2004 Hugo Award for Best Short Story, and the 2005 Locus Award for Best Novelette.

The best part is, you can download it free as either a PDF file or as an Audiobook read by the author.

I don’t normally use the Comic-Book Guy “Best <noun> Ever” joke, because it seems overused and a little trite these days. But honestly, my mind cannot conceive of a better Cthulhu suit than this:

So, I’m at the H.P. Lovecraft film festival in Portland Oregon this weekend. I’ve gotta say, it’s been a blast so far. They have a lot of famous Lovecraft-inspired stuff (John Carpenter’s “In the Mouth of Madness” and “The Thing”), and they have lots of short films (most of them tense and very well executed), and we even had a chance to see the new movie “Cthulhu” which should be released to theaters soon.

Now, this isn’t a full report on the festival (I hope to do that later, with pix and everything), but I wanted to share a great moment with you guys.

Now, I’ve been very surprised by the reaction I’ve received from people at the fest. Several people have asked for my autograph, and a couple wanted to take a picture of me with the puppet.

There’s a film producer (Edward Martin III, he makes real films, not just hand-puppets) who was really excited to meet me. Turns out he’s a fan of the show. I gave him a DVD, and he put it on his DVD player in the merchant section (which was really kind of him). After a few hours, he asked me if I had any other DVDs, because passersby were asking him where they could buy it. I had brought about ten with me, and he was kind enough to make a place on the table to display them.

A couple of hours later, I walked past the table, and saw that my DVDs weren’t there any more. I figured he moved them to make space for something else, but then he caught my eye and said, “Hey, you sold out! Way to go!”

He started counting out money for me while I just shook my head in disbelief. Then he smiled at me and said, “You really don’t get how popular this show is, do you?”

That was a really cool feeling. Right up there with the girl in the full-body Cthulhu suit saying, “Hey, you’re the Calls For Cthulhu guy? I love that show!”

Don’t worry, I’ll have pix of her as well as a full report as soon as the fest is done and I pull all the images off my camera.

Also, there’s a great picture where the artist combines Cthulhu mythos with the art style of “Where the Wild Things Are”.
